Administer PRN medication

How to complete PRN medication on a visit.

Written by Lucy Robbie

PRN medication is not listed among the scheduled activities or medications for a visit because it is administered only when required, not at every visit. Instead, it appears under Add PRN Medication, allowing staff to record it only when it is actually given.

For the same reason, PRN medications do not appear on the MAR until they have been administered. Once a dose is recorded, it will then display on the chart as part of the individual’s medication history.

📌Note: The Add PRN Medication section appears only when a service user already has PRN medication included in their care plan. If you need to add PRN medication to a service user’s plan, follow this guide.

To administer PRN medication, follow these steps.

  1. Log in to the visit.

  2. Under the list of activities, tap Add PRN Medication.

  3. Select the relevant medication.

  4. Add a note if required, then tap Completed.

  5. If prompted, select a reason code.

Once administered, the PRN medication is listed under the standard care plan activities and medications.
